AfrikaBurn The Event

Keeping the flames burning year-round is the challenge which AfrikaBurn’s Special Events team takes on: they’re volunteers who put their heads and hearts into special occasions that offer the AfrikaBurn community a chance to regroup and share their ideas and experiences. Working around the dates that AfrikaBurn takes place in Tankwa Town (at the end of April), the following events take place each year:

DECOMPRESSION

The Decompression is designed to provide a release for the intense build-up of exhilaration that participants accumulate in Tankwa Town. This is a time to reconnect and recollect and reaffirm the power of the year’s burn, and features a great lineup of acts who provide a great soundtrack to a beautiful celebration. In past year it was held at the Bijou theatre, in the Forge, and in subsequent years at Salt River Studios, and also at the German Club. However, in 2016 it was held at the Killarney Race Track for the first time, and will likely continue to be held here as the venue offers an opportunity for Mutant Vehicles to ride and be displayed.

STREETOPIA

Held for the first time in 2015, Streetopia is a community event organised in collaboration with the Observatory Civic Association, OBSID, community-based NGO’s, artists and residents. The hub of the event is the Village Green in Observatory (which is our offices and workyard are located – and where a number of staff and volunteers live) and along Lower Main Road.

You can find the Streetopia page on Facebook here.
