Streetopia Jozi Updates!

In 2015, a little idea to fill the streets of urban areas with the vibe and creativity of Tankwa Town took flight, as Streetopia in Observatory, Cape Town. Five years later, our Obs event – which is in essence a free street fair at which everyone’s welcome – has grown from strength to strength, and will again happen on November 30th. And this year, thanks to a fantastic showing by members of the AfrikaBurn community in Gauteng, Streetopia Jozi will flood the streets of Melville for the very first time this Saturday!

The event, like our Obs affair, is a one-day street fest that kicks off at 10am and ends at 6pm – and just like its sister event down in Cape Town, Streetopia Jozi will feature a number of activities and creative projects that would be familiar to anyone that’s stalked the dust of Tankwa Town.

The event all happens along 7th Street and around the 27 Boxes complex in Melville, and like our Obs event, will also feature a craft market – and two music stages: one hosted by the amazing Dung Beetle Project, and another hosted by The Lucky Bean Cafe.

Mutant Vehicles? Check. Artworks? Check. Performances? Check. Spontaneous self expression, and surprises around every corner? Dead right!

If you’re in the Johannesburg or Gauteng region this Saturday, consider yourself invited – and consider dressing up and participating, just like you do in Tankwa Town. Everyone’s invited to play – and everyone’s invited to volunteer too, so if you see our event team on the ground, say hi and ask if there’s anything you can assist with.

Huge thanks go out to the Jozi Burners massive for their amazing work in pulling the various elements of Streetopia Jozi together – and also to stage manager Thandi O’Hagan for wrangling the many performers that will take to the two stages on the day.
