You multicoloured, costumed, creative beauties – you blew us all away this year!
Over 5000 of us descended on Tankwa Town between 25 and 30 April this year to play, dance, laugh, create and share works of art, amazing spectacles, pure joy, and moments of breath-taking gobsmacking beauty and spontaneity.
Once again, AfrikaBurn has served as a reminder of something bigger and better than the sum of its parts, something fearless and fabulous. And it was simply astonishing!
There were 81 registered artworks or installations this year, and 64 registered theme camps. And while not all of these managed the leap from imagination to Binnekring in the end, there were also several surprise pieces spotted around Tankwa Town. And some surprise performances as well, along with 14 registered performances and events, and at least 32 marvelously mutated art vehicles. That’s a whole lot of creative juice and a whole lot of joy!
And then of course, there was The Storm. Reminding everyone who was boss, it came from the Northwest, and it knocked a lot of Tankwa Town ass over kettle. Quite a few large scale (and a few smaller) artworks were damaged.
Among them were Carrot Egg (T-Rex & the Boxing Bunnies), Dragon, Khamsin and Owl Father Hoot Art In Heaven. The storm didn’t spare the theme camps eitherĀ – Good Clean Fun, Domain and the LEDHEDz all took a beating, as did others.
Also taking a beating – the road into AfrikaBurn, the vehicles on it and the areas where desperate campers drove haphazardly to avoid pools of water. And then there was the newly proclaimed Lake DMV. But at the end of it all, nobody was seriously injured, and in the spirit of communal effort everyone pulled together to rebuild, repair and reinvent. The show went on, and what a spectacular show it was!
To all who helped bring a theme camp, an art car, an artwork, a performance, an event, or an act of gifting to Tankwa Town, to all who volunteered their time and energy and got involved – a great big thank you.
You are AfrikaBurn!
