We’ve got an exciting new project afoot that’s been brewing for some time. In happy news:
a) we get to gather again for a slightly late Burnal Equinox and
b) we get to occupy Observatory (Cape Town) for a day!
AfrikaBurn has a longstanding relationship with the suburb of Observatory: it’s where all our early meetings and movie screenings took place, where loads of our sculptures have been built and where some crews have workspaces. It’s also where our HQ and workshop are, and where a lot of you have held fundraisers and practices. We love its texture and colour – and now we get to flood it with creative projects for one special day.
In essence, we get to do the desert experiment in town on Saturday the 28th November 2015. Remember Open Streets in Obs, when Lizzie the T-Rex stalked the hood? It could be a little something like that.
Early plans are these: a laid-back picnic experience (much like Park-Off) that’s kid, family and suburb friendly on the village green with a Silent Disco, art and performance – and we get to turn Lower Main road into a multicultural playground.
The possibilities are endless – bring a soapbox and deliver a speech about the dying art of growing bonsai vygies. Print a flyer about that nifty DIY solar laptop you built. Dress up as a lemon and hand out oranges. Tapdance to Ma Brrr’s ‘Weekend Special’ in a tutu. On rollerskates. Hand out homemade koesusters. Set up an impromptu silver service dinner for one. Mime the Constitution. Make a scene, create a happening, do that thing you love – the day’s activities really are entirely up to you.
Discussions with the relevant organisations in Obs, including OBSID (the local city improvement district body), the OCA (Observatory Civic Association) and a range of NGO’s, artists, performers and many others are in progress, in line with this event being a participatory experience.
Calling all Mutant Vehicles, Performers, buskers, Rangers, volunteers and artists – bring your dusty desert project to the village green or march it down Lower Main Road! Obs will be your blank canvas for a day – all you have to do is get in touch and get involved.
